Can You Get Reimbursed for Health Coaching?

In some cases, health and wellness coaching may qualify as a reimbursable medical expense under a Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA).

The IRS has issued guidance indicating that out-of-pocket costs for health and wellness coaching may be considered a qualified medical expense when the services are used for the treatment or prevention of a specific medical condition.

If your physician determines that coaching is appropriate as part of your medical care plan, your out-of-pocket costs may be eligible for reimbursement.

  1. Speak with your doctor about whether health coaching is appropriate for your condition.

  2. If recommended, request a Medical Letter of Necessity.

  3. Pay for coaching services and retain your receipts.

  4. Submit documentation according to your HSA/FSA plan guidelines.

  5. Contact your plan administrator with any questions regarding coverage or claims submission.
